We make another stop at Patapampa, the high point of our journey at 4,900 meters above sea level, also known as the Mirador de los Volcanes. There are spectacular views of the snowcapped volcanoes Ampato, Sabancaya and Hualca Hualca to the west, as well as Mt Mismi to the north, which has been confirmed as the source of the Amazon River.

The trek takes us right to the bottom of the canyon, in a descending zigzag that leads to the natural oasis of Sangalle, a verdant orchard set amidst the towering cliffs of the canyon. During the trek down we can see a variety of unique geological formations and abundant wild flora and fauna.
At 2,300 meters above sea level, Sangalle has a subtropical climate evidenced by the groves of palm trees. Here we can take a refreshing dip in swimming pool filled by spring waters with a temperature of approximately 21 degrees Celsius, and enjoy our packed lunch.
In the afternoon we start back up towards Cabanaconde, ascending the zigzag route for approximately 3 hours.
Back in Cabanaconde we have dinner and a restful night’s sleep.
